The Four Pillars
According to dermatologists, there are four basic pillars to a good skincare routine - cleansing, treating issues, moisturizing and protecting from the sun. There are some variations in each of those, but those are the basic steps to keeping your skin healthy and beautiful.
- Cleansing. Washing your skin is the most basic step in skincare, and it is important to cleanse the skin of any oil or debris that it collects. This is true of the skin on your face as well as your entire body. One caveat here is to make sure you're not cleansing too often and stripping the skin of its natural oils, especially if you have dry or sensitive skin. Cleanse in the morning and evening, and make sure to use a cleanser that works for your skin type (dry, oily or combination). You can also tailor your cleanser to treat certain conditions, like acne or the signs of aging. For the face, check out Miracle Hair's all-natural facial cleanse for all skin types or Milk & Collagen Anti-Aging Facial Soap. For the body, try one of Miracle Hair's all-natural soaps.
- Treatments. Toners or serums can help treat certain skin conditions. Keep in mind that you can skip this step if you're not concerned about any issues with your skin. Toners are another step in the cleansing process; they can exfoliate the skin and remove impurities. Serums contain concentrated ingredients to help brighten skin, lock in moisture, fight signs of aging, reduce inflammation and more. These treatments are applied to dry skin after cleansing but before moisturizing, if you choose to use them.
- Moisturizing. Moisturizing is essential for all skin types - even oily - year-round. If your skin is oily, look for something lighter that will absorb quickly. For dryer skin, seek out a thick moisturizer. Look for ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid, which help the skin retain moisture. There are also specific nighttime creams that are thicker. These are not necessary, but are an option to add to your nighttime routine.
-
Sunscreen. Most dermatologists agree that applying sunscreen is one of the most important parts of any skincare routine. After all, the sun's rays can not only make skin look bad, but they can cause internal damage that can lead to skin cancer. Nonetheless, sunscreen is the last step in the morning skincare regimen. Apply an SPF 30 or higher face sunscreen 30 minutes before you head outside. If you like, you can combine this step with moisturizing, and choose a moisturizer that contains sunscreen. If your body is going to be exposed to the sun, you also need an SPF 30 body sunscreen or spray that's reapplied every two hours of exposure.
In addition to following the tips above for directly affecting the appearance and health of your skin, you can engage in lifestyle habits that will help keep your skin looking and feeling healthy, including:
- Protecting your skin from the sun. Lifetime exposure to the sun's harmful rays can not only cause wrinkles and sunspots but can also cause damage that can lead to cancerous cells forming. So use sunscreen, as mentioned above, and seek out shade when you can. You might also consider wearing a hat or other protective clothing to protect your skin.
- Not smoking. Smoking greatly contributes to wrinkles and also narrows the blood vessels in the outermost layers of the skin, decreasing blood flow and making skin look paler. It also damages collagen and elastin, which are necessary to keep the skin strong and elastic, and looking good.
- Eating a healthy diet. You are what you eat, right? So fill up on fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants that help keep skin healthy, and avoid greasy, oily foods and refined sugars. Some important nutrients your skin needs include vitamin A, vitamin B12 (riboflavin), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc. Consider taking a multivitamin to ensure you're getting your recommended doses of these, but don't forget that eating right is the best way to get them.
- Managing stress. Too much stress (you know that some stress is good for you, right?) can take its toll on your skin, making it look dull and sometimes even triggering acne breakouts. Manage stress, get enough sleep, and find a stress-relieving activity to keep your mind and body healthy.
- Drinking enough water. Your skin is mostly water. Hydrating helps improve the skin's appearance, just like adding hydrating elements to its surface.
-
Exercising. Physical activity not only improves general health, but can help improve the skin's structure. Try to get 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week.
